On 07.11.2024. prof. Ph.D. sc. Marijana Hadzima-Nyarko held an invited lecture entitled “Seismic Prioritization of Buildings in Selected Urban Areas” at the 18th International Scientific Conference CIBv – Civil Engineering and Building Services 2024. The focus was on the analysis of seismic risk as a key element for the protection of human life and socio-economic stability. By quantifying the risk and applying scientific methods, it is possible to develop strategies to reduce the seismic vulnerability of buildings and increase the resilience of communities.
As part of the presentation, she presented the Erasmus+ project IM4StEM, which involves the international collaboration of seven partner institutions. The aim of the project is to analyse earthquake risk, predict the vulnerability of buildings and test new recycled building materials using digital tools and machine learning. So far, data has been collected on buildings in several European cities, and a mobile application for data input has been developed.
Particular attention is being paid to seismic vulnerability assessment methods, with a focus on the Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) method. This method allows buildings to be quickly categorised according to seismic risk using the Seismic Priority Index (SPI). It was applied to buildings in the centre of Osijek to determine the need for further, more detailed analysis. It was concluded that such tools enable better earthquake risk management and contribute to safer urban development.
