As part of the 17th Days of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, researchers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture Osijek presented the scientific paper “Comparative Analysis of Fundamental Period Formulas for RC Frame Structures.” The paper, authored by Josip Radić, Antonija Ereš, Ivan Bandalo, and Marijana Hadzima-Nyarko, presents research conducted within the IM4StEM project.

The presentation focused on estimating the fundamental vibration period of reinforced concrete frame structures, a key parameter in seismic design and structural response assessment. The study compared empirical formulas prescribed by international seismic design codes, including Eurocode 8 and American standards, with expressions proposed in scientific literature. Particular attention was given to their precision and suitability through comparison with experimentally determined fundamental periods from a database of 64 reinforced concrete buildings investigated using ambient vibration measurements.

The results showed the limitations of simplified empirical formulas based primarily on building height, which may significantly overestimate or underestimate fundamental periods depending on structural characteristics. The findings emphasised the need to consider additional parameters, such as structural stiffness, building geometry, and masonry infill walls, to improve the reliability of seismic response predictions.

Participation in the conference provided an opportunity to disseminate IM4StEM project results, exchange knowledge with international researchers, and contribute to ongoing discussions on improving seismic assessment methods and the earthquake resistance of existing buildings.
